Pelfrey pathetic, Mets get swept

I don't know which is more unbelievable, that Pelfrey in only 3.2 innings gave up nine runs (eight earned) and four walks or that Jerry Manuel left Pelfrey in the game long enough to give up nine runs.

Pelfrey was pathetic. In his short stint, why was he allowed to face 25 batters? That fact alone makes make me question Manuel's managerial skill.

J. J. Putz pitched the seventh and gave up two runs on three hits. That outing ballooned his ERA to 5.22. He sure doesn't look like an answer to the Mets bullpen needs. Is any other team still interested in him?

On the plus side, Sean Green continues to show improvement. In two innings his numbers were all zeros except for a lone strikeout.

After watching the Mets get swept by the Pirates, I'm becoming more pessimistic about the team. They just lack something. Even a blockbuster trade might not right the Mets ship this season.

BREAKING NEWS
The New York Post reported late this afternoon that J. J. Putz will likely need to have elbow surgery soon for a bone spur. The elbow problem could be what's responsible for his poor performance.
