Mets = Bland

The Mets failed to win the pennant during the last two seasons because the team lacks emotional leadership, a problem that starts at the top. Minaya's personality is like Willie Randolph's. Bland! Not even Jerry Manuel was able to steer the Mets to a pennant last season, though he did show an ability to get tossed out of games.

Among the players, none have shown the chutzpah that can shake a team out of its doldrums. The Mets need a player whose play can stir things up, as Sean Avery's has for the New York Rangers in season's past. Or a player with Pete Rose's fearlessness. Until someone like that emerges, second place is the best Mets fans can hope for.
