The second half of the season looms

The second half of the baseball season is about to start, and I don't expect the Mets to win their division. Sure, they've won nine straight, but they still have Billy Wagner as their closer, Carlos Delgado as their first baseman, and weak corner outfielders until Church returns.

What should the Mets do?

Trade Wagner for a corner outfielder or a first baseman. Xavier Nady is available, but it's rumored the Pirates want two prime prospects for him. The Mets should forget about trading any more prospects, something Minaya has shown a penchant for doing.

Trade Delgado for whatever they can get. He's going to become a free agent after this season, so the Mets should try to get something of value for him.

Relegate Castillo to permanent backup status. What Minaya was thinking when he signed Castillo to a four-year contract mystifies me.

And here's something Minaya should not do: He should not make a decision on Manuel's future as the Mets manager until the season's over.
