A Quick Look at Josh Satin and Reese Havens

Josh Satin has quickly figured out how to hit Triple-A pitching. After eight games with the Buffalo Bisons, Satin's hitting at a .355 pace. The 26-year-old might make it onto the Mets roster before this season ends.

In contrast, in Binghamton, Reese Havens is still trying to figure out how to hit Double-A pitching. Touted by some as one of the best Mets hitting prospects, Havens is only hitting .265 this season though he hit .294 in his last 10. His plus over Satin is that he's two years younger.

Quick Hits

☛ Only one Bison made this season's International League All-Star team: Pat Misch. Misch has a 9-3 record with a 3.12 ERA and a WHIP of only 1.17. He's struck out 64 while walking only 19. In his last 10 appearances his ERA is 3.01. The Mets could use him in their starting rotation.

☛ Three Binghamton Mets made the Eastern League All-Star team: pitcher Josh Stinson, catcher Mike Nickeas, and outfielder Kirk Niewenhuis.

☛ In the Florida State League, the offensive player of the week is Rebel Ridling. He doesn't play for St. Lucie; however, he has a most unusual first name, and I like the way his first and last names both begin with the same consonant.

☛ The FSL's All-Star game was played last month:

"Josh Satin of the St. Lucie Mets took home the game's Most Valuable Player honors. Not only did Satin belt a game-tying two-run homer off Daytona's Aaron Schafer in the eighth inning, but he came through with a go-ahead RBI-single in the top of the 10th to put the South ahead to stay." (Source)

☛ The Cyclones won yesterday despite poor pitching, 12-9. Rightfielder Cory Vaughn hit his seventh home run, making him the league leader in that category. Centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani's three hits upped his average to .388, tops in the league, though his OPS of 1.000 is only second-best. Shorstop Rylan Sandoval hit his fourth homer. As a team, the Cyclones lead the NY-Penn League in hitting but are sixth in pitching. (The league has 14 teams.) Is their hitting coach that much better than their pitching coach?

Two Met Prospects Hitting Well

Though the B-Mets lost, Josh Satin continues to have a hot bat. After going 1 for 4, his average is now .353 in 34 at bats in Double-A. Satin started the season with St. Lucie, hitting .316 for them, including five homers. Surprisingly, Satin, a righty, is hitting right-handed pitchers much better than left-handed ones. Against, righties, he's hitting .407; whereas, against lefties, he's hitting only .143. He's one of the Mets best second base prospects. This is Satin's third season in pro ball.

Manning centerfield for the B-Mets is Sean Ratliff. In yesterday's game, Ratliff, who's hitting .314, batted second. He, too, got a hit in four at bats. A left-handed hitter, he's hitting well from both sides with the B-Mets. Left-handed, he's hitting .313; right-handed, he's hitting .308. Ratliff's in his third pro season. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.



☛ Jenrry Mejia made his Binghamton debut. He was the first of six pitchers. In 2.1 innings, he yielded two hits, a run, and struck out three.

Sand Gnats Have Dream Game

The Savannah Sand Gnats played a memorable game last night. The Gnats pounded the Augusta GreenJackets' pitching for 18 runs while giving up only three. Josh Satin led the Gnats' hitters. He reached first base five times, four times on singles and once on a walk. Five other Gnats had multi-hit games; the only Gnat position player not getting a hit was first baseman Eric Campbell.

The Gnats' run-scoring was far more than starter Robert Carson needed. In six innings, the lefty held the GreenJackets scoreless, surrendering only one hit and one walk.

Satin can hit. Last season, his first in pro ball, he had an OPS of .873. Carson also did well. In 2008, in 53.2 innings his ERA was only 1.68.
