The players included are the ones who, for the most part, have had the most at-bats at their position this season. What I found really surprised me.
For every position except third base the Phillies player had a higher OPS. Further, while four Phillies had an OPS above .900, not one Met did.
Position | Mets | OPS | Phillies | OPS |
C | LoDuca | 0.663 | Barajas | 0.719 |
1B | Delgado | 0.766 | Howard | 0.995 |
2B | Valentin | 0.676 | Utley | 0.996 |
3B | Wright | 0.890 | Helms | 0.679 |
SS | Reyes | 0.832 | Rollins | 0.853 |
LF | Alou | 0.838 | Burrell | 0.902 |
CF | Beltran | 0.823 | Rowand | 0.915 |
RF | Green | 0.746 | Victorino | 0.781 |
Ready for a second suprise?
The 2007 salaries for the eight Mets total to $61,930,585; in comparison, the eight Phillies' salaries total to $36,495,714.
Phillies: higher OPS's, lower salaries. That could prove to be a dangerous combination for the Mets as the pennant run heats up.
